AFTER READING ABOUT NNFF I REALIZED HE HAD SYMPTOMS FOR A FEW DAYS PRIOR TO GOIMG TO THE HOSPITAL ON 10/24/99, BUT NO ONE CAUGHT IT IN TIME. HE HAD BEEN TO THE HOSPITAL A FEW DAYS BEFORE COMPLAINING OF SOME SYMPTOMS. I WISH PEOPLE WERE MORE AWARE TO THIS NIGHTMARE BACTERIA.

Comments about the web site: My Sister Susan Dougherty died on March 7, 1997 from NF after giving birth to a healthy baby on February 17, 1997 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. It saddens me to find out about the death of the 20 year from syracuse. I read her story online last week. After reading her aunt Gloria's comments from Oct. 23, 1999 it brought all those feeling of Sue's loss back again. I have been a funeral director for over 15 years. Before Sue's death I have never knew anyone who had died from this disease. Since then I have talked with many people who have had love ones died from this. It is amazing how in almost all cases, the doctors do not recognize until it is to late. After a year of State investigations the Hospital and Doctor recieved only a slap on the wrist, even thought Strong was found neglient on 4 counts and Dr. Sanko had his licensed suspensed. The 4 counts against Strong where dropped because they admitted wrong doing and they had a plan of correction in place after Sue's death. Dr. Sanko had his suspension stayed because he admitted wrong doing and agreed to 400 hours community service. Also Strong Memorial settled the case out of Court with Sue's Husband and 3 children. Almost 3 years later her daughter Shannon is a wonderful child. She knows her mother is in heaven, but will not comprehend this loss for many years. I want again thank Donna at NNFF for her support of our family. She provided us with great information that helped our case.

Comments about the web site: One young man Dead and the other is recovering from the flesh eating disease. Joey Hoskins 19 years old was dead before the week was over after having his knee sutured at Marybreckinridge hosp in Hyden Kentucky. This happened about three months ago. At this time another boy is recovering. He is at home now but still has tubes to recieve antibiotics through. His name is Tyler Smith aproximatly 10 years old. He became very ill after a sprned ankle. His severe illness turned out to be the same bacteria that caused Joeys death. I am concerned with this. I know both of these people witch makes me worry that this deadly disease is concentrating here. Along with recent outbreakes of meningitis. Joey was transported by air to the university of Tennissee where he passed away. Tyler Smith was transported to The University of Kentucky he is still under their care and making good progress. Could this disease be concentrating here in this area along with autbreakes of meningitis.

Comments about the web site: I am a healthcare worker in a hospital laundry in Canada. I am very unfamiliar with this disease. Does anyone out there know if this didease can be killed through the normal washing of hospital laundry. With the amount of disease out there like this, I am wondering about my safety at the work site. In the main hospital bleach is used to terminal rooms and instruments, but, the laundry is cleaned normally. Is there a chance of being infected from soiled linen? If anyone out there can help me, my co-workers and I would be very grateful.

Comments about the web site: NNFF is something I have never herd of. My opinion on this is one of the most horrible diseas's. I have never seen or heard of. I wish people knew more about this, because I think if they did my dad would of had a chance. He had been to the hospital for other things and had all the singns of NNFF, but nobody caught on to them. He was only 51 years old. He had just retired from Truck dr. and was planning alot of things to do. He had 10 grandchildren, one was born 5 months ago. the next one was born 2 days before he died.He never got to see that one. He was a very special man and still is in all of our hearts. He is dearly missed by his wife,mother,7 chidren, and 10 grandchildren. He went through a lot of pain and suffering. I just wish some of it could of been prevented. IN LOVING MEMORY OF KENNITH E. KING

Comments about the web site: i am a cna at a nursing home in reno nv, this last weekend i came in contact with nf. the patient, i will not give out her name, was a 37 year old woman, with nf, this disease scares me so much, i would like to learn more. we were all taking isolation precautions, is this over kill or should we have been doing this? ssadly this woman passed away while we were in with her, cleaning her up. her wounds were unlike anything i have ever seen before, her skin was just falling off literally, we would clean her peri area, and blood would just come from everywhere. this was the worst disease i have ever come in contact with. i would like to know a little more on this disease, it was really scary.

I think if more people knew about this disease then they would be more willing to give money. I didn't find out about it until I started to take this class and I wiah I had knew about it sooner. Comments about the web site: I'm saddend more each time I see someone else has had to go through what my family did when my mother died 09-26-99 of NF. I can't help but think that more could have been done. Other times I feel it was a blessing after reading horror stories of others who try to live and cope with this or have it come back to threaten them again. I know the pain of loosing someone so close will start to subside, but right now it is very hard to believe. May God place his healing hands on all who are touched by this. I still find it hard to relive the day the doctors said there was nothing else they could do. We got to say goodby and tell her how much we all loved her. I hope she could hear us. The whole family was there. She was so bad at that point, when the doctors removed the meds from her, it took only 7 minutes for her to die. Her kidneys had already shut down, she had a heart attack that morning, she had a small amount of lung capacity and was again in septic shock. It is extremely hard to even write about now, but she will always be my Butterfly.

Comments about the web site: I CONTRACTED THE DISEASE IN MAY OF THIS YEAR. IT STARTED IN MY RIGHT ABDOMEN AND SPREAD INTO MY INNER RIGHT THIGH. I SPENT THREE WEEKS IN THE HOSPITAL, TWO MONTHS OFF WORK AND HAVE GONE THRU 5 SURGERIES. THE ORIGINAL MISDIAGNOSIS WAS 'SEVERE LYMPHONIDES' AS THE PAIN BEGAN IN THE LYMPHNODE AREA IN MY RIGHT GROIN. I HAVE READ MANY OF THE PUBLISHED STORIES ON THIS SITE AND AND AM STILL AMAZED AT THE FEROCIOUSNESS OF THIS BACTERIA. I STILL HAVE OPEN WOUNDS FROM WHERE THE BACTERIA DESTROYED MY SKIN. I AM STILL ON ANTIBIOTICS AND MEDICINE FOR PAIN, BUT AM DETERMINED TO WIN. I HATE WHAT HAPPENED, I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. BUT WILL DO ANYTHING TO SPREAD THE WORD AND EDUCATE PEOPLE TO BE AWARE THAT IT IS OUT THERE.

Comments about the web site: Your website was truely informative. Someone in my hometown passed away 11 weeks ago with this disease. Family members were traumatized to say the least. I intend to pass along this info as well as your address. The boy was only 19 years old, healthy, and contacted this as the result of stitches following a motorcycle accident. After meeting with his parents through a mutual friend, my career in the health care field drove my attention to your site. The teenager was seen at 4 different hospitals before diagnoses. Thanks.

Comments about the web site: I am now trying to recover from my third bout with an invasive group A infection. The first time I had it was in 1993, and I went into toxic shock. I had been diagnosed at a walk-in clinic with a sprained ankle, although I had no recollection of injuring myself. I had a red, swollen area on my ankle that was emitting a lot of heat, even though I did was not running temperature. I was not able to walk, except with crutches or a walker. I had no wounds on my foot or anywhere else, not even a bruise. I became alarmed when two days later, it spread to the other foot, also. I went to the hospital emergency room, where it was diagnoses as cellulitis, although the doctors were puzzled because there were no wounds, and both feet had become involved. To make a long story shorter, I went through two months of this, no being able to walk most, but not all, of the time, going from doctor to doctor, antibiotic to antibiotic, blood pressure dipping down as low as 70/40 (toxic shock) and finally getting better. Until this summer, that is. I had to have a root canal and oral surgery. Three days after I completed my antibiotics, the cellulitis appeared on one foot and I was barely able to walk. I went to the emergency room right away and was lucky enough to get a doctor that is knowledgeable about invasive GAS. He gave me a huge dose of penicillin G and it worked! I got rid of it by the next day and could walk just fine. When this is systemic, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE AN INJURY IN THE SAME AREA THAT BECOME INFECTED. Invasive GAS is just that--it gets in your bloodstream. Extremities become infected because they are outside the peripheral immune system manufacturing which takes place in your bone marrow. Week before last, the dentist removed the temporary filling from my root canal. Last Friday night, after waiting in the emergency room for nine hours and was not so lucky this time. The ER doctor insisted that this was on the surface of my skin, even though there is no wound. He did not give me the penicillin I needed, offering instead a prescription of Naprosyn (which you can get over-the-counter as Advil, etc.) I was able to see my regular doctor on Monday and am taking IV strength oral clindamycin. Thanks for letting me vent. The biggest problem is not just the public's lack of knowledge. It is the lack of knowledge of physicians and hospital staff, when they do not know that PROMPT MEDICATION makes the difference between life and death.

Comments about the web site: I was looking for info on this disease because of a problem my girlfriend is having with peeling skin on her hands. Thankfully her syptoms don't those for this disease.I believe her condition stems from having her hands in alcohol where she works. (Medtronics in GR) I was somewhat frustrated at the trouble I had trouble finding info on this disease, thinking "skin disease" would work in the search. Persistance paid off going thru several links. I would hope someone with more realistic symtoms could find it easier."Flesh Eating Bacteria" were the key words to finding the site. Being from the Grand Rapids area recall seeing your story in the Press. If I hadn't just went thru a debilitating divorce (financially and mentally) I would have loved to help out. Good Luck.

Comments about the web site: I started developing severe pain in my left groin area in late May of 1999. I went to an urgicenter and was told that I had "an infection" and was given a prescription for antibiotics. I left work on June 2, 1999 in severe pain where I could hardly stand up. Two days later, a friend of mine who is a physician assistant, came to see me. I was confused, disoriented and in a lot of pain. She called for an ambulance. Upon arrival at the hospital, my vital statistics were so unstable that the surgical call was to hold off on the tissue removal. The next morning began the first of 10 surgeries to remove the necrotic tissue. I spent 2 weeks in the ICU and my familiy was told that my prospects were grim. I am only 40 years old, but I was fighting for my life. I had an 11th surgery whereby the skin from my legs were used to do grafting. This surgery was largely ineffective. I was in the hospital for 4 months and have had to learn to walk all over again because of the inactivity of my muscles. I have endured endless dressing changes, megadoses of morphine, was septic and have had a multitude of secondary conditions. I am doing well now, but I know that emotionally, it will take a long time to heal. Physically, the wound is closing, although there are still some open areas. I have opted to wait it out for the wound to close. My family and friends have been wonderful and I had the best surgeon possible. He was very aggressive in his treatment and intensely cared for me throughout my hospital stay and still does. Anyone who wants to e-mail me to discuss their experiences or to ask questions is welcome to do so.

Comments about the web site: My daughter is going through this nightmare bacteria at the moment. She is only 5 1/2 years old. Her infection started from chewing her thumbnail. There was no sign of broken skin or infection at all one night and the next morning her thumb looked horribly infected with multiple puddles of pus under the skin. She had a surgery on her thumb after four days and two different antibiotics (which did nothing to slow it down) and we are hoping that, coupled with heavy duty antibiotics, it will get rid of this terrible thing. It is certainly not like any infection I've ever seen.

As you can gather from reading about the high rate of misinformation and misdiagnosis of NF leading to death or severe disfigurement, the need for mainstream awareness of this deadly disease is urgently needed. I am currently working with a journalist from a primetime, highly respected news program for just this reason. What we would like to do is chronicle a survivor's experience as early as possible in the disease, through the treatment process, recovery, and healing. If you or a loved one would be interested in assisting us in this important informational program, please email me at jroemmele@aol.com. Again, our best chance at saving lives is through public awareness -- this is a wonderful opportunity. Thank you very much! Happy Holidays, Jackie

Comments about the web site: I'm reading this page since my girlfriend's brother was diagnosed with Group A Strep with NF. This has been a wonderful source of information and it was inspirational to read the personal survivor stories. I hope we can all get better educated on this disease and one day eliminate it.

Comments about the web site: My sister has been in the ICU at a hospital in NYC for almost three months, recovering from a severe case of NF which started with an intestinal leak after abdominal surgery. She lost part of her intestine, abdominal muscle, tissue, fat and skin. Her wound, which is still open, is about two by two and a half feet and several inches deep. She faces another month or two in ICU before her wound can be closed, followed by several more months in the hospital and in rehab. If anyone has had a similar experience I'd love to hear from you. My sister needs all the encouragement she can get. When she was first diagnosed, this webpage provided a wealth of information which was very helpful to us.

Comments about the web site: I work at a funeral home in Arlington and we had a body come in today with this condition. I want to thank you for your information. I was rather concerned after finding out the cause of death. Now I know what to look for if I did happen to have adequate contact with him to get the disease. And most importantly, I will know to get immediately to the hospital if I begin to show signs of any of these symptoms. I'll be calling my other co-workers who were involved in his case right away. Thanks again.
