Comments about the web site: Our 31/2 year old daughter contracted NF and suffered toxic shock 5 days ago.Your site has been very interesting but also frightening to realise how close she came to death. She is starting to recover now but will still be in intensive care for several more days.We live in London,England and will be interested to know how we can help develop awareness of this condition and crucially education about its early diagnosis in the UK.

Comments about the web site: My mother recently passed away after being in the hospital for 6 weeks with this infection. She had it in the back of her neck and endured 13 surgeries/ debridements. My mother was a vibrant woman who hadn't been sick a day of her life. For approx. 4 weeks of her hospital stay she was "knocked out" and on a ventilator. It was VERY hard to see my mother like this especially since there was very little warning that anything was wrong with her. My mother had just been at work 2 days before going to the emergency room and was "apparently fine" at that time. Those 6 weeks had been a roller coaster ride from hell. Actually, my mother was "beating" this but ended up developing a blood clot near her heart and passed away when part of the clot broke off. I would never wish this gruesome infection on my worse enemy.

Comments about the web site: I had breast reduction done last June 1998, contacted the bacteria 1 wk after surgery, within one and 1/2 days it ate the underneath of both breasts. Within 6 wks I had 20 Doctor appts. 9 hyperbaric treatments 2 a day, saw 5 Doctors and had skin graft done on both breasts (under part). A real ordeal. At the time of the infection started, my house reaked of dead skin terrible odor.Wonder if anything legal can be done???

Comments about the web site: I lost my cousin, Brook, to this horrible bacteria on March 13, 1999. It's too bad that the public AND the medical community haven't been better informed as to what the symptoms of this disease are. Never in a million years would have my Aunt thought that a "sprained ankle" or "strep throat" would have taken her daughter's life! Brook was sent home from the hospital with a shot of antibiotics.... and passed away three days later. At least she died in her mother's arms - knowing how very much she was loved. We all miss her terribly. God must've needed her more than we did.... Thank you for creating this very informative web site! I will definitely be passing this on. God Bless all of those who have been through, or lost a loved one to this awful bacteria!

Comments about the web site: I recently went thrugh a bout with N. I was 40 years old. I was told that I had less than a 30% chance of suvival. My story began in December of 1997. I still cannot believe that the human body can endure such pain. It started with flu like symptons. Within a matter of hours I was so sick that I did not feel that I even had the energy to go to the doctor. Finally my husband literally carried me to an emergency room at which I was told that I had an upper respitory infection and sent home. Within 10 hours I was so extremely mentally confused and in so much pain it was almost unbearable. My husband took me to our family doctor, even though I complained that I was too sick to go. I was admitted to the hospital where eventually my lungs collapsed, I had exploratory sugery, tubes were put into my lungs for drainage, they inserted a tube into the sack surrounding my heat to relieve the pressure on my heart because my heart rate was 174 beats a minute (and had been for 4 days) and I had something called (ARDS) Adult Respitory Distress Syndrome which the odds on suvival from that are less than 30%. But to my numerous doctors amazement I pulled thru (this I believe is due to God and the love of my family), I still have numerous complications and the damage to my heart and lungs will never be completely normal. I now feel grateful just to wake up every morning and see the sunshine. GOD IT'S GREAT TO BE ALIVE!!!!!

Comments about the web site: In 1990 I developed NF. We were living in the town of Cody, WY at that time, and the doctors there knew of the disease, but had never treated it. I presented with a fever of 104+ degrees, but no other symptoms at that time other than severe pain in my left leg along with swelling. 48 hours later, little white dots formed on my foot, the leg swelled to twice it's normal size, and the pain became intense. The course of treatment is complicated. One of the doctors in the practice of my main doctor wanted him to remove my leg, but my doctor really worked very hard to find just a little bit of blood supply to the limb, it was very touch and go for several weeks. Of course, we are very thankful for the work he did. After six surgeries, a month in the hospital and a $42,000.00 bill I went home for almost six months of PT and recuperation. What I am interested in is the effects of this disease on the mentation of those affected. Afterward, I feel that I was affected mentally for almost a year. Also, I still suffer from intense pain in my left leg, along with swelling. Is any work being done in this area? One more question, are there any statistics on the probability of a repeat of this disease in those who have had it before? Are we more susceptible? I've been told yes and no, which is hardly consolation! Sorry for the length of this note,I am looking forward to reading your book.

Comments about the web site: I just stopped in to see how everyone was doing. Lots of new entries since the last time that I was in here. You girls are doing a fabulous job on this website. I noticed lots of new listings in the table of content and I can't wait to get into the chat room and the book sounds like it will be very helpful to all of us who have experienced NF (physically and especially mentally). I'll check in again real soon. God bless to all.
