My name is: Carol A. Rolfe Comments about the web site: I am also a survivor of this "horrible" infection. A mother of 3 children, a wife, a daughter and a friend to many people. I woke up one day, three days after my 39th birthday, November 15th, 1997 with my right arm in excrusiating pain. Although I did nothing we thought maybe carrying my almost 3 yr. old son, I may have "pulled" a muscle. I called my clinic and they instructed me to go to the emergency room at our hospital. I did so. The doctor told me I pulled a muscle, gave me a sling and pain pills and sent me on my way. Never asking further questions or doing any blood work, etc. This visit by the way was at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. The following day my arm did not get any better and the pain medicine was not touching the pain. I called my clinic again and this time they instructed me to go into the Urgent Care center. This was at about 6:00 p.m. I arrived there and they had a hard time getting a blood pressure on me. I was dehydrated and needed two bags on fluid. They also could not find a vein to administer this. They finally got a blood pressure and it wa 60/40. Not good. They did some blood work (which the hospital emergency room should have done the day before) and my sedrate was 59 or so, when 20-25 is normal. This meant I had an infection. My mother was with me and said that I also had like a hive on the under portion of my right arm. They gave me the fluids and also an antibiotic and told my mother that if I was not better within 72 hours call my physician. Leaving the Urgent Care center was the last thing I remember until I woke up after being in an induced como for 3 weeks. On Tuesday, November 18, I went to a doctor at my clinic and they immediately admitted me to the hospital. Six hours later I was moved to intensive care. I was there until November 21, 1997 and then was transferred to the U.W. hospital here in Madison which teaching hospital. I was transferred because the first hospital did not know what I had, but Dr. Dennis Maki knew exactly what I had. Along with the assistance of Dr. Richard Helgerson and the burn unit at the U.W. I was in a 6-1/2 hr. surgery to remove the skin and fat that was affected. It goes from my right thigh to my abdomen, a portion of my back and under my right arm. They had to remove muscles and lymph nodes. They saved my life. I was brought out of the como around 3 weeks after and was told what had happened. During that time I also had a skin graft surgery. When I awoke I still needed two additional surgeries. I was finally released on December 23, 1997 and was able to spend Christmas with my children and family. Thank you God and all the prayers. It is now March 11th, 1997 and am doing extremely well. My arm is still somewhat swollen but is working. I have many appointments for P.T. and O.T. But I am here to say that I survived this horrible infection and hope that between myself, my family and the staff at the U.W. Hospital in Madison, WI. that we can all help someone learn and survive this in the future. My heart and prayers go out to all the families of the survivors and the victums that were taken by this awful infection. My name is: Tony Comments about the web site: The only strep I ever knew was strep throat. Every kid got it. Like mono. I began hearing about cases of group A striking people locally, in the Boston media, nothing since then. It's like it has gone away! Then I read comments (on your sight)from people in my area who have contracted group A. I didn't hear of those. I am terrified! Is it true Texas is up to 56 victims? My name is: Windy Blackmon Comments about the web site: Your information was very helpful to me and my family. Three small children in my family were diagnosed with Strep A. Of the three children, two attend elementary school and have seen this infection spread through their school like wildfire. Some of their classmates had this infection and died in the last month. They are residents of Nixon, Texas, just outside of San Antonio. I think the schools should be better informed and should better inform the children because they too see what this infection has done to them and those around them. Thank you again. My name is: Billie Dreyfuss Comments about the web site: An acquaintance of ours lost his wife right around X-mas, 1995.She died of NNFF giving birth to a daughter. so I thought I might bring this site to the attention of her man, who is left to raise his baby.I notice as soon as Art Bell put up his link to your site that you started to get a lot of that the GOV'T planted this disease stuff. Is my understanding correct that occurences of this has been around a long time?--wasn't it President Wilson's son (or President's Coolidge's ?) who died of it after getting a small blister on his heel from his shoe while playing basketball? If the gov't wanted a germ for germ warfare testing, why would they use this one which seems to kill so few people and is so unpredictable as to where and how severely it will strike? Seems to me there are plenty of much more devastating organisms around. I am more interested in this disease from the point of view of what can be done to track, predict, prevent, and cure it from a public health point of view, and what self-care we can engage in as individuals so we won't have anymore of these shocking deaths like what happened to our community member whose wife died almost instantly during what should be one of the happiest events of a person's life. I think it's a waste of effort to think it's some government conspiracy. Thanks for the good info and I think I'll be giving anti-biotic ointment as X-mas presents. My name is: Susan Stolsig Comments about the web site: I was visiting this site in Jan 98 and it seems that even without the horrible occurances in Austin, Texas that medical people who aren't hooked up to the WEB, don't know anything about it. Especially, our ER rooms and outpatient clinics in our local areas. I appreciated seeing how much nurses and doctors want to know more about this. My brother in law is raising two children by himself since the death of my sister over 2 years ago(Dec. 23, 1995). I know he has been encouraged by what he has seen on this page. We need be informed to fight this! Thanks!! I'm from: Moses Lake, WA Email: - How I found the page: - My mom told me after my sister Pam died in Dec 95.

My name is: Debbie Hitchcock Comments about the web site: In Febuary I went in for a Tummy Tuck, I came out with flesh eating bacteria. 3 operations later the so called Doctor didn't know or care what i had. I ended up in the emergency room with an infectious disease Doctor doing proper test to realize what was wrong. The Doctor that gave this super Bug to me, Didn't want me to bother him anymore He asked my husband and myself to find another plastic surgeon. Which Thank God we did. My name is: Kathy Sigafoos Comments about the web site: I am a survivor with serious concerns about how doctors and HMOs handle this serious disease. I had horrible treatment from most of my doctors, because they were too involved with the approval of their own group in approving procedures and investigations of diseases that might require bringing in specialists from outside the area. Diagnosis was delyaed for approximately 2 weeks because of the local doctors unwillingness to bring a specialist to the local area.
