My name is: Rod Keller

Comments about the web site: I contracted NF in mid-December of 1998 in my pelvic area. I fought it for three days, thinking it was a bad flu. On the fourth day we went into the hospital. And only after a tentative diagnosis of a hernia, did the surgical team find the mysterious gray puss which, once cultured, was confirmed to be the product of NF bacteria. Most of my body’s systems shut down around that time. It was touch-and-go for about five days. During my 30+ days in the hospital, I endured seven rounds of exploratory and debreedment surgery, extremely heavy IV antibiotic therapy and daily hyperbaric oxygen sessions to combat the infection. It left me weak, exhausted, physically limited, and 15 pounds light of protein that my body re-allocated to healing the wounds. Faith brought me through. Two weeks after my hospital release -- six weeks after contracting NS -- I stubbornly went back to work. My wounds were still open. I required dressing changes twice a day. I hurt. I did everything I could to speed up my recovery. I forced myself to eat as much protein and high calorie food as possible; walked until I was exhausted. Probably over did it. But I was tired of thinking of myself as a patient, as a victim. I wanted my old life back. I am still alive. To paraphrase author Mark Helprin, “these words are, to some, trite and contrived; but to the souls who have ever been challenged on that count, this is the most delightful, profound thing one can ever say. I thank God every day.

Comments about the web site: I saw on the news last night that eleven people have died in the Chicago area of Strep A. It's the first time I've seen any kind of a warning about this! They told which symptoms to watch for and showed a picture of someone with this. It's about time this made the news! It's too bad eleven people had to die before they said anything about it though!

Comments about the web site: As a med. student researching "necrotizing fasciitis" as my independant study topic, I found this site very informative. It uses simple language that most can understand, whereas my medical encyclopedias are very complex in their use of diction. This site answered questions and gave me information I can apply to my study. Thanks!

Comments about the web site: My son was 21 years old when he went into the hospital for an emergency appendictomy at the end of June, 1998. He was treated and released within three days. Within the week, his surgical site was hard as a rock and discolored yellow and red. He had been suffering from a slight fever and backaches. He had been examined by his primary surgeon on Friday and given a clean bill of health. By Sunday, he was admitted to the hospital and taken for surgery to determine if he had an abscess. That surgery lasted more than five hours and was just the first of at least six. We came very close to losing him. Today he has lost most of the tissue and some muscle on the right side of his torso to this killer. Skin grafts cover most of this area. I have told my son he is one of the bravest people I know. I do not know if I could deal with the personal loss. We try to focus on the fact that he is still here. I would like to hear from anyone in the York,PA area that has had experience with this disease. Please email.

Comments about the web site: It has been quite awhile since I have been back to read the heart-breaking stories. My son was diagnosed with this Group A Strep when he was just 2 months old. Doctors didn't believe me when I said there was something desperately wrong with him. His pediactric doctor and the ER doctors all told me he had a cold and it would get worse before it got better. That was the only thing they were right about! After taking him to the doctors and hospital for 3 days straight. He woke up with his belly enlarged and I again rushed him to the doctors and then next door to the hospital. I was told the bacteria had spread through his entire blood and it was now poisoning him. They told me he would not survive...that not many kids survive this bacterial infection because of their size. I was devistated but could not give up hope. I told myself that he could not die and that he wouldn't. The infection started around his left lung. The ER doctor put in IV into his shin bone and the reddish/black blisters appeared. They assured me that the blisters would heal and did some tests to see if the infection went into the bone. They said it did not. Well...after 1 week of no improvement. The doctors decided to call in a thoratic surgeon and he would have to go in and scrape my son's lung. He also had a portion of his lung removed. The blisters on his leg were medicated and left alone. From there...we waited until he slowly recoved. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life. Well...as an update. He is now 4 years old. The only problems he has are with his right leg. The infection destroyed part of the growth plates in his right leg (tibia)at the top and bottom of the bone. He has had 5 operations on his leg. First to correct the growth plates (which did not work) and then to correct the deformity that is in that leg. Recently he had his growth plates competely destroyed and his leg straighten and lengthened with an Ilizorov fixator. The proceedure took 6 months with the contraption on. His leg is beautiful now (scars and all). It is straight and longer than his other leg. He will need 2 more leg lengthening surgeries. If his doctor and the ER doctors would have just listened to me...my son would not have had to go through so much pain. I am very fortunate to have persisted. If I would not have...he would be an angel in heaven! I am very selfish...I wanted him for myself. My heart goes out to all who have had this horrible bacterial infection. With better education...doctors will recognize it and treatment can be started immediately. Which I believe is the KEY!

Comments about the web site: My husband passed away July 19, 1998 from Necrotizing Fasciitis. He was misdiagnosed and died within 3 days in the hospital. After the 1st day a friend of mine asked could it be Necrotizing Fasciitis because all of the symptons were the same. I immediately called the hospital and told them but they chose not to believe me and said "Oh, no we don't think its that bad yet." I asked that they at least look into it and check to make sure. They didn't follow my request and it cost me my husband. I swore that I would find out everything I need to know about Necrotizing Fasciitis and do whatever I can to keep it from killing. I would like to be a volunteer and I will more than likily make a donation also. I do have a couple of questions. Do you know if the patients that died were in extreme pain when they died or do they pass away in their sleep? How does their body shut down? I'm hoping my husband died peacefully. Thanks, and I am greatful for this web site. Keep up the good work. Please contact me for anything.

Comments about the web site: My husband Jim is a survivor of NF, and he is looking for legal resources because of the delay in his diagnosis. Jim is interested in getting the word out on this deadly disease. Jim lost his major and minor pec muscles due to NF. He was in ICU for 45 days and total time in the hospital was 100 days. The result of TSS left Jim with gangerous fingers and toes, which were amputated.

Comments about the web site: What a great job!! As a survivor of NF, I know how crucial it is to have information "out there" for the public. Yeah the bug is rare, but it ain't all that rare, so the best defense is to be educated! The Colorado state epidemiologist's office just recently advised the citizens of this beautiful state, that there are 150-250 reported cases of NF, in the state of Colorado every year. Pretty scary. Thank you both for getting the word out! It takes pretty special people to do the work you all are doing. By the way, as a result of my illness, I lost both my legs and my right hand. I've started a support group in the Denver area for amputees, and would be happy to support (well not financially) anyone who has lost a limb. The group does have a website at www.casteam.com. Keep up the good work ladies!!!!

Comments about the web site: My mother died on Feb. 17th from this horrible sneaky disease. I am still in disbelief that she's gone because it happened so fast. She had been complain of pain in her lower right groin area but nothing was there on sat morning, by sat night there was a small blister and by sun morning there was amuch larger rash. ( I am repeating what my brother and sister told me as I was not there. She had become disorientated and they thought it was because she was severely diabetic so they took her to the hospital but it took two & 1/2 days and several doctors before she was diagnosed. By then it was too late. She never had a fighting chance because no one knew what she had until it was too far gone. She was 74 and she died in my brother and sisters arms on their 49th birthday.I hope that everyone out there will try to help these brave and selfless women get the message out to as many people and health care providers as possible.I am looking for a way to undestand all of this and I am grateful for this opotunity.

Comments about the web site: I was diagnosed with the flesh eating disease on Feb 11, 1999. I spent 1 month in the hospital, and had a total of 7 operations on my right lower leg. The doctors managed to save my limb with the removal of my skin and muscle. Other treatments used were skin grafts and a hyperbaric chamber. I am currently recuperating at my appartment in Halifax, and plan to return to Toronto as soon as possible. I would like to thank everyone who stood by me during this difficult time. Comments about the web site: Your story was so interesting, for someone like me who never heard of this flesh eating bacteria before. L hope my dear friend is as lucky as you are. hers was not caught as fast as your, she did see a doctor right away , her blood pressure dropped, he gave her presc for antibiotic, said that was bad looking and would take a couple weeks to clear up (she had a lump on her leg that was infected, which she thought was a boil) 5 days later i went to her house, she was so weak she couldn"t get up alone and the lump had broken and puss was running out of it. Now it was spread all over her leg. i got sick when i looked at it. when we got her up the bad odor was so bad , i have never smelt anything so bad in all my life. Took her to the hospital right away. This was the 9th of mar l999. she is having her 4th surgery tomorrow am, is in select care at the hosp, and has been out most of the time. By the way she has a new doctor, i myself blame her family doctor that sent her home and should have followed up on this when she was in his office. She did have the flu symtoms, hadn't eaten hardly nothing in 5 days, just drank lots of water. Don"t really know where we stand at this time with her, the doctor did say she will be staying in the hosp at least 3 more weeks if not longer. where they cut out all this infection above her knee,on the inside of her leg, the wound is the size of a saucer (that you put a cup on) my dear girl i learned so much from reading your story, i am so happy for you. It brings tears to my eyes. Say a prayer that this lady is as lucky as you. God Bless You and i wish you all the happiness in the world.

She went through a series of tests over a 12 month period until finally she knew what she had. Mom was put on anti-inflammitories 5 months ago and antibiotics. 2 months ago they took her off antibiotics and said she should walk and get plenty of excercise, but her legs ache so bad that she can hardly do so. The stiffness and aches seem to travel from her neck and arms all the way to her legs. Mostly her legs. The Doctors have said there is nothing else they can do! Comments about the web site: I am a survivor of NF. I was stricken suddenly, two years ago today, March 24, 1997. I was not expected to survive. Lost large area of right chest wall, pectoral, flank, & fist sized chunk of right arm. Went into Septic Shock, blood presure bottomed to undetctable on Med-Evac flight. Nerve damage to hands and feet, optic nerve stroke cost 50% vision loss. I did not realize there were so many of us who've been stricken with this disease. I am struck by the same theme of TRAUMA/STUNNED/DISBELIEF carried in almost all survivor accounts. They so errily mirror my own reactions. I am 46 year old male in excellent health 'till NF struck. Have come long way in two years with GOD & FAMILY'S LOVE & SUPPORT. Would like to hear from others.

Comments about the web site: I developed NF following a hysterectomy operation in November 1998. A second operation was performed two days after my initial surgery and a lot of tissue was cut away from my stomach. I spend some time in Intensive Care and the High Dependency Unit at my local hospital and am now (March 1999) still receiving daily treatment from the district nurses. I would be interested in hearing of other cases in the UK.

Comments about the web site: Great info. I am an er registration clerk at a hospital and have seen two cases of NF come thru our hospital in 48 hours and was very concerned. Wanted to know if this was contagious thru direct contact with the wound. God speed to everyone affected by this disease.

Comments about the web site: MY BROTHER DIED FROM THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE AS A RESULT OF A MISDIAGNOSIS. HE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED IF HE HAD BEEN PROPERLY TREATED. I AM INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE LOST FAMILY MEMBERS DUE TO A MISDIAGNOSIS AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE PURSUING ANY LEGAL REMEDIES.

Comments about the web site: My mother died from NF Jan 23,1999. She had flu symptoms several days earlier. She went to the hospital on Jan 22, 99 early a.m. None of the doctors or nurses had any idea what was wrong with her or even considered it to be anything serious The infectious decease doctor was not be planning to check on mom until later that day or the next day; sometime after he had reviewed ER docs. After many complaints from myself, sister, and brother a doctor just walking down the hall was asked by a nurse to take a look at mom. He called another collegue into the room and all hell broke loose. Unfortunately by this time, the small patch on her leg had spread to her entire leg, and while these docs were in the room (approx 15 min) it jumped to her shoulder and back. She was gone by the next early morning. Until I found this site, I was lead to believe NF was very rare and no one survived. The entire medical community seem to have their heads in to sand about NF.
