| My
husband died on July 15, 2008, from this infection. He was 46 years and
left behind six children. His ankles were swollen and the ER doc thought
it was just fluid in his legs from his liver disease. He was kept for
observation. The next morning I thought I was going to be picking him
up from the hospital and find him unresponsive. He was moved to a cardiac
floor because his sugar was low and his blood pressure was down. When
I looked at his legs they were huge. I asked the nurses if any one had
seen his legs and they said they weren't worried about it. They were worried
about his blood sugar levels! Later that day the doctors finally started
coming in and decided to put him on a respirator. His kidneys started
shutting down soon after. When he wasn't responding to the antibiotics
they did emergency surgery to clean out his legs. They also started dialisis.
The dialysis did not work . The following day I had to make the decision
to have both of his legs removed. He made it through the surgery and I
thought maybe he would survive but he was not improving. The following
day he passed away. The doctors asked me if he had been in the ocean.
We had gone on July 2. They also asked if anyone told us about the risk
of infection from the ocean because of the liver disease and the answer
was no. I just want people to know that if they have a weakened immune
system that this can happen and to know the signs . So that you can get
help early. My husband had no chance. Antibiotics were started way to
late. I couldn't save my husband but my goal is to save someone else from
this infection. I do not want anyone else to suffer the heart ache that
my family and I have had to endure. |
