My beloved husband had been in remission from squamous cell skin cancer
for 6 years. We had bought a new home 3 years earlier and were going to
retire in it together. The first week of April, 2009, he got a sinus infection
and an ear infection. He went to the doctor and was told to see an ENT
specialist. He could not get an appointment for several days. On April
3, 2009, he woke up vomiting and with chest pains. I took him to the emergency
room. The ER doctor told me he was critically ill and to contact family.
His blood pressure was dangerously low. The doctor did not know what was
wrong with him. He called the head doctor of the hospital and he was 95%
sure it was a perforated esophagus. They were giving him strong antibiotics
from the beginning. After more tests they ruled out the perforated esophagus.
He was admitted to ICU and more tests were run. He became agitated so
the sedated him. That was the last time I talked with him. On April 4, 2009 he was doing better but the doctors did not know what was wrong. Five doctors examined him including an infectious disease specialist. He neck and chest began turning purple that afternoon. They put him on a respirator. The doctors were hopeful when they diagnosed him with NF that afternoon. We just had to wait for the antibiotics to work. I went home that night and at 4 am I get a call from the hospital that he took a turn for the worse. He died at 8:30 am on April 5, 2009 with his family surrounding him. My son was only 11 years old when he lost his father. It is still hard to believe. Our dreams and future are gone. |
