In Loving Memory
Mary Kelly
November 26, 1951 - February 19, 2006

My mom was admitted to the hospital on November 25, 2005, late Thanksgiving night. She had been having flu-like symptoms for about 2 weeks. My mom was very dehydrated and disoriented and weak. I called 911 and she was taken by ambulance to the hospital and I went with them. The ER thought that she had pneumonia and she would be out in 3-4 days. So I spent the night at a friends. The next morning I called to check on my mom and they said she was in the ICU/ Critical Care Unit on Life Support/The ventilator. They said her kidneys and respiratory systems had failed. She was on continuous dialysis. They said she had a 50/50 chance but thought she wasn't going to make it. They said she had Necrotizing Fasciitis. It was a strep A bacteria. Her leg had to have debridement about 4 times and had many other leg surgeries. They put a wound vac in her legs to drain infection out. After about 1 month and a half she started doing better and better each day but one day the main leg artery in her leg broke another time she had bleeding from her legs before also. They took care of it. She began getting better. Her condition was downgraded from Critical to Serious and they thought she was going to make it! Her kidneys began working on their own. They had her breathing on her own for a few hours each day. For about 1 week her infection was GONE no more NF. But unfortunately the next week she got Sepsis/Septic Shock. Her colon became very ulcerated and so she had a colonoscopy. She seemed fine but after a few days she began having severe bleeding in her stomach. They stopped it by giving her blood products and many units of blood. Eventually her blood would not clot at all. The doctors couldn't stop her bleeding. The sepsis had damaged her body so badly. She was on strong antibiotics and many different types but nothing was working. Her organs began to fail. She was put back on continuous dialysis because her kidneys shutdown completely. It wasn't doing much for her and she continued bleeding into her stomach. Their was nothing else the doctors could do. She fought so hard to live for me and my brother, I'm 15 and he's 19. We miss her alot but we know she's in heaven and out of pain. She was misdiagnosed by her regular physician and the doctor thought it was a common virus. She may have been bitten by a brown recluse spider. We love her and miss her very much.
