In Loving Memory
Donna Jean McElroy
October 14, 1945 - January 21, 2006

Story given by youngest daughter Kimberly Smith

Donna was very depressed from losing her one and only love, Marvin, to cancer. He passed January 27, 2004. Donna had a bad knee due to an old softball injury; which she thought this was all just her bad knee. Now we know different. Donna had a round rash on her hip then started getting bumps on it. It quickly started turning black and was spreading rapidly. Donna went to the ER and was admitted with low blood pressure on December 28, 2005. Donna was released on December 31st with a diagnosis of shingles. The site at this point was gangrenous, which had oozing blisters that were bursting with putrid stench. Donna would wobble to the restroom and infectionous poison would gush onto the floor. This was very painful for Donna to even walk. She awoke around five a.m very dehydrated and trying to get some ice water in her system. She ended up passing out on the kitchen floor. A ambulance was called for Donna and she was rushed back to ER January 2, 2006. She was intubated and rushed into surgery for amputation of her left leg ABK and possibly her right foot. She made it through surgery. January 3, 2006, her second amputation took place on the right leg BTK. This was terrible. We all were hoping for a miracle and we had allot of people praying for Donna. During the second surgery the infection had to be surgically cut out of her left side abdomen area around to her back. This was terrible the site was like she was just filleted open basically. Very excruciating pain for her to endure while dressing changes had to take place once a day. The left limb was an open wound; that the doctors had to do debridements on. Mom was aware of her amputations once off off of the vent. We did a DNR after the second amputation. A filter was put in to keep blood clots from going to her heart. At this point Donna planned her whole funeral and witnessed to everyone that she spoke to. She is an amazing woman; when asked how she was doing, she would say wonderful. That goes to show you what kind of person she was. With everything she was going through, she said she was wonderful. Mom was on a allot of antibiotics from the get go; which led to a yeast infection. Her bottom had oozing wounds on it which bled due to her laying up in the bed. Talk about pain. All I could do to ease her pain was to remind her that she was suffering like Jesus so that we all could have a good life. Mom loved the Lord and we all know she is in a better place now - dancing in Heaven with her love, Marvin. I pray that all medical workers become a little more aware of this disease and how to diagnose it through your amazing website to inform others of this deadly disease so called the killer bug. My mom had three bugs in her body. (E Coli Escherichia, E. Faecalis (Enterococcus) and M. Morgoni (Morgonella). My Mom did not deserve to die such a horrible death. I feel Mom's immune system was just too low to fight this infection that led to the failure of her organs and passing. Mom I just want to say thank you for always being there for your children and family and thank you for all the cherished memories you left with us. You will always be her in our hearts and lives. We will never forget you and the love you have for us. I'm so sorry you had to endure the pain you did. It is all worth it now and we'll see you in Heaven when it is our time. We love you Mom.
